Australian honours: awards received by the Monash community

Australian honours are the highest recognition awarded to Australian citizens. They are bestowed on those who demonstrate excellence, achievement, service and significant contributions to society.

Australian honours are unique in that the community makes nominations, and any member of the public can nominate someone for an award.

The Australian system was established in 1975 with the founding of the Order of Australia. Prior to this, Australian citizens were recognised under the British honours system. The awards are designed to not only recognise the contributions of individuals, but to also encourage and reinforce Australia’s national ideals, and provide role models for others.

Honours can be awarded at any time, but are mostly awarded on two occasions annually: Australia Day and the Queen’s Birthday holiday.

There is an impressive number of categories of honours that can be awarded, including the Order of Australia, gallantry and bravery awards, and service awards for military, civilian and public service personnel. Monash staff, alumni and friends received eight different awards this year.

The highest recognition is awarded to those appointed to the Order of Australia. These are the awards given to community members who make a significant contribution to society. The Order of Australia has four levels: Companion of the Order (AC), Officer of the Order (AO), Member of the Order (AM) and Medal of the Order (OAM).

Monash recipients come from all walks of life and have been recognised for achievements in a diverse set of fields, including law, business, the arts, sports, medicine and health, community work and philanthropy, politics and education.

The range of fields in which our recipients received awards reflects the diversity of the Monash community and their contributions to society. The recipients can truly be said to represent the famous quote by our University’s namesake, Sir John Monash:

“Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community.”

We congratulate the following people and recognise the wonderful contributions they have made to society.
