Biography
Gary is an expert in biomedical imaging and neurodegenerative disease. He is director of both the Monash Biomedical Imaging facility and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Brain Function. He uses advanced imaging techniques to map brain structure and function, and conducts clinical neuroimaging research in Huntington’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, and healthy ageing research.
“If we can map the circuits and pathways of a brain disease well before it starts to take hold then it may allow us to come up with and track the progress of experimental preventive therapies in the future,” he says.
As MBI Director, Gary oversees state-of-the-art imaging infrastructure that includes MRI and PET scanners for both human and preclinical research. MBI and the adjacent, connected Australian Synchrotron Imaging and Medical Beam Line form the only integrated synchrotron imaging and multi-modality biomedical imaging research facility in the world.
