Biography
Erica a low-vision artist who was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease, a juvenile form of macular dystrophy, at the age of 23. Her research aims to depict, as accurately as possible, the entoptic effects of macular disease, and its impact in everyday life. By utilising the very visual language of art to express the loss of vision itself, her research reveals that macular dystrophy is far more pervasive, dynamic and intriguing than the static images commonly found in both medical texts and popular media.
These findings contribute to new understandings of the nature of vision loss, and its impact, for those suffering both Stargardt’s and other forms of retinal disease, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), while also initiating further discourse between medicine, art and the wider community.
