Carl is the foundation professor and director of urban planning and design at Monash University. His primary research areas include community and economic development, cultural planning and policy, and urban revitalisation planning. He currently leads the Australian Research Council project Urban cultural policy and the changing dynamics of cultural production to better understand the interactions between the cultural industries and small manufacturing firms in Melbourne, Sydney, and abroad.
