Biography
Anastasios is a mathematician whose research focuses on applying statistical methods to data to extract meaningful information and relationships. He is currently developing innovative forecasting methods that can be used on a range of important problems involving “Big Data” – vast quantities of simulated and empirical data from Australia and the US. He is also composing an online handbook of available Australian economic data for public use.
In one project, he constructed a model to predict consumer behaviour based on data from website visit duration, page views, purchase incidence, and the sale amount from top-ranked US online retailers.
More recently he has focused his statistical lens on the same-sex marriage vote in Australia. He has created an interactive map that shows, for each electorate, the proportion of same-sex couples, either male or female or both, along with 2016 federal election two-party preferred votes for each seat and the sitting MP. The visualisation is an excellent example of how statistical treatments can bring Big Data to life, in this case highlighting the connection between social demographics and politics.
